Footballs

The idea of a wooden football came about years ago, just to see how it would come together.  Then many years later a set designer for the Super Bowl Game Day show contacted me about using two for Super Bowl LII, so I quickly built a second one out of figured walnut.

After this came two walnut footballs commissioned by the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, which include a laser engraved logos.

Also included are footballs made from various woods, including figured teak, walnut, bubinga, zebra wood, leopard wood, and canary wood.

And finally is an open lattice-style football made of teak.  The woven illusion created by hand-chiseling the wood, making it appear that the braided strands are individual pieces passing over and under each other.  The inspiration for this is drawn from the sound hole lute rose found in the musical instrument section.  I’ve also included a video of the construction of the teak lattice football.
