Lute
This Renaissance lute was the first musical instrument I built in 1981. The wood bending techniques I learned became the basis for many future projects. The decorative lute rose pattern for the sound hole was a design I created. Since I built this lute long before the days of CNC routers, it was all cut with a jeweler’s saw, and the woven look was created with a tiny chisel.
Materials:
Mahogany (back and neck), Sitka spruce (top), rosewood (pegbox and bridge), and ebony (fingerboard and tuning pegs).
